Dane Cook and Robin Williams – together?

That’s exactly what Hollywood gossip columnist Perez Hilton is reporting… and better yet, it’s happening on Broadway! Supposedly, Dane Cook has been cast alongside fellow comedian Robin Williams in the Broadway show Fat Pig, which will make its debut sometime in 2011.

It’s a first for Dane, while Robin will actually be making his Broadway debut (not counting comedy specials, of course!) earlier in the year in the show Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo.

So whaddya think – odd casting, or oddly fitting pairing? :)

Drew Carey returns to improv

Drew CareyLooks like fans of Drew Carey and his work as the host of the old improv show Who’s Line Is It Anyway? (well, the American version at least!) will have new reason in 2011 to cheer… or applaud, or call out scene ideas, or whatever feels right in the moment: Drew is bringing yet another improv show to television.

Word has come down that the Game Show Network has ordered episodes of a new, as-of-yet-unnamed improv show that will air next year. There’s little official word on the show yet, including casting (although Carey regulars Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Kathy Kinney have all been mentioned in rumors), but Carey announced via his Twitter feed that the shows will begin taping live at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas beginning January 13th. Tickets should go on sale soon – so keep an eye on the MGM Grand’s website for details!

The spectacular Denis Leary?

Denis LearyThere’s a new rumor coming out of Hollywood this morning that comedian Denis Leary is now in negotiations to join the cast of Sony‘s reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise.

No, the Rescue Me star won’t be rescuing people as the red-and-blue clad webslinger; rather, he’s talking about taking on the smaller role of George Stacy, a former NYPD police captain and father of Spidey’s love interest Gwen Stacy. (Yes, as hardcore nerds like myself already know: in the reboot, Sony is going back to Peter Parker’s first girlfriend Gwen, who was later replaced – after one of the most notorious deaths in comic book history! – by Mary Jane, who was played by Kirsten Dunst in the first 3 films. Got that? :) ) Rumors are that it’s a small role – but as Capt. Stacy did tie into several larger storylines throughout ol’ Web-head’s long and convoluted past, it’s entirely possible that Denis could be lining up for a rather profitable string of film appearances, should the new franchise take off. Not bad!

The winner of the Boston Comedy Festival is… a TIE?!?

Well, here’s a first! The Boston Comedy Festival took place this past weekend, with its highly-respected annual competition, which draws some of the best comedy talent in the country each year. It’s a great credit to have on any comedy resume, and this year the award goes to… TWO different comedians! For the first time in festival history, there was a tie in the voting for first place, as both Saleem and Nate Bargatze (yes, the same Nate Bargatze who just won the New York’s Funniest competition a few days ago – what a week!) split the audience and both took home co-ownership of this year’s title, beating out fellow finalists Orlando Baxter, Nick Cobb, Matt D, Will Sylvince, Mehran and Lamont Price, and filling the spot now vacated by 2009 winner Dave McDonough.

Congratulations, guys!

Tim Allen to return to TV?

Tim AllenThat’s the latest word, according to Deadline.com – stand-up comedian and Home Improvement star Tim Allen may be headed back to television; in fact, he may be headed back to the very network that made him a star in the first place – ABC. Allen’s Home Improvement was a ratings staple for years for ABC back in the ’90s, and now the Alphabet Network is hoping that there might be a little “more power” left in the ol’ Tool Man as they’ve agreed to a pilot commitment for Man Up, a new project from comedy writer-producer Jack Burditt (30 Rock) and a potentially new starring vehicle for Allen.

Whaddya think? Can Allen deliver another Home Improvement-style hit for ABC… or should they desperately be searching for whatever rock Jonathan Taylor Thomas is currently hiding under? :P

“Conan” premieres TONIGHT!

Conan O'BrienWe’ve been talking about this for a long time now, and finally the big night is here – Conan O’Brien returns to the airwaves TONIGHT! TBS proudly fires its next shot in its battle to establish itself as a major player in the comedy world with tonight’s premiere of Conan, and the hype is at a fever pitch. Nobody is entirely sure what to expect – we don’t even know who the first guest will be (as voted on by Team CoCo fans in that special poll we told you about last month); the big question, though is: Will Conan’s fans return after his long absence? Or will low ratings prove NBC right in their controversial decision to oust O’Brien from The Tonight Show so they could reinstate longtime host Jay Leno, himself the victim of his own ratings disaster?

It all goes down tonight at 11pm EST/PST on TBS – so set your TiVos, because the comedy community will be buzzing about this one for a good long while! I can’t wait!

“The Benson Interruption” premieres tonight

It seems that, starting tonight at midnight, comedy fans around the country are going to get access to a treat that up until now has been pretty much exclusive to live show audiences in New York City and Los Angeles – Doug Benson‘s hilarious The Benson Interruption. The show, which has enjoyed popularity amongst the alternative comedy crowds at hipster spots like The Upright Citizens Brigade theaters, is pretty basic in its concept – Benson hosts a slate of his stand-up comedy buddies, such as Nick Swardson or Patton Oswalt, and sits on stage as they perform… constantly interrupting their flow with comments of his own on their topics of discussion, often resulting in an entirely different focus than perhaps the comic under fire originally intended.

Check out a preview of the show here, where Benson and Swardson go head-to-head:

Yet ANOTHER Chelsea show…

Chelsea HandlerHoly freakin’ Nielsens, Batman – just how many film and television projects does one woman need? Is Hollywood even aware that there ARE other female comediennes in this town besides Chelsea Handler? :P

With Chelsea Lately already a ratings behemoth and that After Lately show we told you about soon to follow, you’d think that TV audiences had already gotten their fill of the booze-swilling blonde Chelsea, but no – according to Deadline, there’s yet another show in the works… and this time, it’s in primetime. It appears that NBC has given a pilot commitment to Chelsea’s pitch for a semi-autobiographical sitcom, based on her bestselling book Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea. The show will loosely follow Chelsea’s adventures during her 20s, as she bounced around from family problem to family problem and bed to bed. The show will be written by Dharma & Greg co-creators Dottie Zicklin and Julie Larson; Chelsea herself will take on an executive producer role, but will not star in the project.

Sounds like it could be yet another ratings hit, considering Chelsea’s massive appeal to the female demographic… but when she starts shilling breakfast cereal and Nikes, I am so out of here. :)

Harrison Greenbaum wins Andy Kaufman award

Harrison GreenbaumCongratulations go out to comedian Harrison Greenbaum, who has claimed the 2010 edition of the prestigious Andy Kaufman Award. Greenbaum beat out 5 other finalists last night in a performance at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City to join an elite list of past Kaufman winners that includes talented comedians like Kristen Schaal and Reggie Watts.

“This award means so much to me on so many levels. I’m just so ecstatic and feel so honored to be even a small part of such an incredible legacy,” Greenbaum stated after his win. “Andy has – and continues to be – such a huge inspiration on my comedy and my life that being recognized as embodying Andy’s creative and original spirit by his family, friends, and industry professionals is just mind-bogglingly awesome.”

Congrats, Harrison!
